The 2016 Geoff Egan Memorial Lecture will take place at the Society of Antiquaries of London on Monday 12 December.

‘Business as Usual’: the Great War and the ceramics trade

 

David Barker, Freelance ceramics specialist and former President of the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology

 

The events of 1914–1919 had a dramatic impact upon all aspects of British life, not least upon its manufacturing industries. The pottery industry was not alone in feeling the effects of labour shortages - and the need to fill male roles with women workers – and it suffered from the closure of markets, shortages of raw materials and difficulties in pursuing the all-important export trade. At the same time, the War had some transformational effects upon the industry and upon the consumption of ceramics that were far from negative.

 

The lecture will be held in conjunction with our AGM; the AGM will begin at 5.30pm followed by a wine reception at 6pm, and the lecture will commence at 7pm. Tickets are FREE but limited in number so book your place here.
