Is this it?

If so, I have always had the same questions...Mainly why were those show in this book selected, and who published it?

I bought mine many years ago, and it has helped me in my research many time.

Good find!

regards

David

I have three of them, all different, and I have no idea how many different volumes were printed. It appears that they were sold on subscription and when they had enough biographies they put them in a volume. Here are the names of the men on the first page of each of my volumes: Lieutenant C K Anderson, Acting Captain Douglas J. Aldridge, and Major Norman Macleod Adam. Do your volumes have the same starting names or are they different? Regards. Dick Flory

There were about 13 different volumes in this series. They were "by subscription" and have the air of vanity publishing - whether realtives simply subscribed or paid a premium I do not know. Certainly they are not very common. Do be careful with copies as the colour does run with the slightest damp.

As for the information I have found that it is not necessarily very accurate.

David: Does your volume have any Royal Artillery officers in it. Is so, I would appreciate knowing their names. Regards. Dick

Dick,

I know it has at least one: Lieut. Harold Stratton Matthews 1st Brigade CFA

(I have his 1914-15 Trio, Memorial Cross & Scroll)

A quick flip through shows also:

Lieut. H. L. McNaughton RFA

Lieut. M. A. P. Noble RFA

Hope that helps,

David

We have Lt. C K Anderson as well and the ink has not run!

For some reason these volumes, beautifully produced as they are, seem to sell for "silly money" and we have seen copies between £100 and £200. They are a lovely thing to have but can be pricey unless you are lucky.

Here are the names from our volume (which Dick also has).

It would seem an ideal project for someone to get all the volumes together, digitise them and produce a CD Rom or DVD. I wonder how many names would be covered by all the volumes ?

Simon,

Yes - though could you please bear with me, as I don't want to slam the book onto a photocopier, so the obvious alternative is a digital photo. Now, I can take digital photos, it is the next bit that foxes me, so your request will form part of my digital education.

Also, could you let me have your postal address via PM, as I have the promised piece on Mott of the Artists Rifles.

Lt W B R  Rhodes-Moorhouse VC  Royal Flying Corps

If these were vanity books, it would be interesting to know what is said about Rhodes-Moorhouse. Does it include the fact that he was 1/2 Maori?

No Christine, it does not mention that fact. It mentions his father, but not his mother (although this is the case with many of the entries). By the time of his death he was married with a daughter, and his entry ends with some of the cerrespondence his wife received from his friends and colleagues.

Can you tell us something about his Maori family?

Rhodes-Moorehouse had an infant son who was to die 25 years later when his Hurricane was shot down over Tunbridge Wells. The aircraft crashed near Southborough but Willie Rhodes-Moorhouse DFC is not listed on the Southborough memorial. Rhodes-Moorehouse senior was one of the very few Great War dead to be repatriated. Father and son are buried side by side in the grounds of the family home in Dorset.

Mine starts with Captain Arthur Addenbrooke, R.War.R. So between us we have five of the volumes which for ease of listing has the first entry as :-

Capt. A Addenbrooke

Lt. C.K. Anderson

Act. Capt. D.J. Aldridge

Major N.M. Adams

Lt. D.A.H. Acheson

Any more?

From recollection there was another similar series called "The National Roll of the Great War 1914-1918", or are these the same ones?

Hi,

No, these are definitely two totally different publications. The British Roll of Honour was a very high quality publication and all entries were paid for by the deceased officer's family. Certain officers do have entries in more than one volume and by that I mean in volumes which are not identical, if you see what I mean!! I can only assume that these duplicate entries were made by a further subscription from the families involved to boost and aid publication of subsequent volumes which were short of subscribers? I believe that entries for some officers do appear in up to five different volumes, although these numbers make up a very small minority.

The National Roll contains entries which are mainly for survivors and have very brief service details, medal entitlements and home addresses. There are no portraits included and the publication was definitely more of a budget publication and was produced by certain cities and areas unlike the British Roll of Honour.

Robert
