Remembered Today:

NEED HELP a BQMS RFA

Hello all

A friend at work has lent me a photo of his grandfather who served in the Great War. He does not know anything about, except that he died a few years after the war. His name was Charles Albert Payne from Birmingham.

Checking the Medal Card Index I have found a BQMS Charles Albert Payne 14054 Royal Field Artillery. Could this be him?

Does the rank in the photograph match that of a BQMS ? Is the cap badge a standard RFA badge or might the scroll below the crown be for "Warwickshire" i.e the Warwickshire Royal Field Artillery. On his tunic sleeve. What does the cloth badge above his stripes signify?

Thanks

Terry

I am not an RHA RFA expert but yes, I believe him to be a Battery QMS. The gun badge is standard for all full sergeants and above RA, much as the grenade for RE.

Thanks Grumpy.

I have now down loaded the MIC for BQMS C A Payne. He served in 34 Bde RFA and his qualifying date for his Star was 16 August 1914.

Is there any 34 BDE RFA experts out there?

Hi Terry,

not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I've had a look at the relevant war diaries before (relative in the same Brigade) and they are complete and very detailed:

WO 95/1324 34 Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1914 Aug. - 1917 Apr.

WO 95/385 34 Army Field Artillery Brigade 1917 May - 1919 Apr.

They were attached to 2nd Division until reorgansiation into Army Field Artillery Brigade, January 1917. Saw plenty of action, I think.

Little bit of discussion here

Cheers,

Marc

BQMS Charles Albert Payne (14054) of 50th Bty 34th Brigade was I believe killed 14th september 1914 on the Aisne so this would appear not to be him - but I can't get into the the CWGC site at this moment to check

Such a fine portrait I thought it worthy of the colour treatment!

Hello all

Thats a fine job you did there Ian colourising the picture.

Martin B..... I am glad that you checked him on Soldiers Died. Thanks for that. Now I had better check at work again to make sure I got his christian names correctly. His surname is Payne. The photograph was took in Hudson Studios, Birmingham in 1919. Is he a BQMS or a BSM?

I also had a go

I have now got the correct details from the Medal Cards

Cpl Albert Payne 57675 RFA

BQMS Albert Payne 57675 RFA

Can anyone help with 45 Bde RFA history?

Thanks
