auchonvillerssomme Posted 19 May , 2007 Share Posted 19 May , 2007 No reason for posting this except I was touched by the age differences of these men in the same cemetery. Chris Noble Posted 20 May , 2007 Share Posted 20 May , 2007 Hi Mick. One of the first cemeteries i ever visited on the Somme. P.P.L.I. if i am not mistaken, can't remember if they are buried in No.1 or No.2. However, the memory of that first visit has stayed with me forever. If anybody hasn't visited these on a Somme visit, take it from me, a must. I do believe though, the area, if i am not mistaken, at the time of the Somme Offensive, was Woodland? Great photos Mick. Kindest regards, Chris.

maryh Posted 21 May , 2007 Share Posted 21 May , 2007 Thanks Mick, the pictures bought back poignant memories. On a recent visit to the Somme I was taken to find the graves of two of my Canadian cousins, one of the them at Contalmaison - R T Wilson (Dick), eldest of three brothers, who died 2 days after his youngest brother John Willie (who is buried at Bapaume Post, Albert) and 3 months before the middle brother Sam (buried at Aubigny). There is something very moving about in field cemeteries like Contalmaison, they are truly haunting places. Whenever I hear skylarks now, it takes me back there. I've ordered copies of the men's service papers from the Candian Government to help me find out more about them and how they died. They were aged 37, 28 and 23.
