andigger Posted 6 September , 2006 Share Posted 6 September , 2006 It looks like I might be spending a weekend in Budapest next month. I was wondering if any pals had been there and could recommend any monuments or museums that are WWI related and worth visiting. I realize its a little off the beaten path, but I'd hate to come back and learn there was a great site that I just missed. Thanks, Andy

Terry Denham Posted 6 September , 2006 Share Posted 6 September , 2006 You could try Budapest War Cemetery. It has 172 WW2 war graves plus a lone grave from WW1 - a Royal Navy man.
Regulus 1 Posted 8 September , 2006 Share Posted 8 September , 2006 Definitively you have to do the war museum and archive in the castle district in Buda. Great collection, partially on WW I and some interesting material on Szent Istvan etc.
andigger Posted 8 September , 2006 Author Share Posted 8 September , 2006 Thanks for the insight.... Terry I might just try to find that lone WWI soldier! Thanks Regulus I was wondering how good the military and history museums were. Andy
Regulus 1 Posted 9 September , 2006 Share Posted 9 September , 2006 There's also a monitor which can be visited from the pre WW I era which was active in the Donau fleet. Normally it is at the Pest side of the city and quite central. It's name is the Leitja. Restoration should be happening on it for the moment, at least I hope it's finally the case... http://www.oz.net/%7Emarkhow/pre-dred/leithahist.htm http://magazin.navigare.hu/flottilla/laj_1.shtml For a list of the Budapest museums : http://www.budapestinfo.hu/en/culture/museums
