Military Medals Index of 1917 London Gazette

For those who saw my earlier post on the Index of the Military Medals in the London Gazette.

Part 1 of Military Medals London Gazette Index (1916)

I have now completed Indexing the Military Medals announced in the Gazettes of 1917 (with corrections as far as the end of 1918).

These add another 22,500 to the 16,500 of 1917. Total = 39,000 MMs to date.

I have these sortable by Surname, Unit, Rank, and Gazette issue.

So, again, if anyone would like a name looked up or a list of MMs by Regiment/Corps I would be happy to oblige.

The later 1917 Gazettes also reflect the new Territorial Numbers making it easier to track a likely unit (and being 1917 they are more likely to be in the unit in which they were renumbered)

Also the new Corps are also represented - Labour Corps and Tank Corps.

As from September 1917, the residences of the MM winners are shown.

The same caveats apply to the 1917 Index as to the 1916:

1) Only the information from the Gazette is shown. This generally does not include specific Battalions/units. In Late 1918, the units were shown again, but you'll have to wait for those ones!

Of course, for your £3.50 from the NA, you will get a unit name in addition to the Gazette entry, but I hope I can save a few £3.50s for people just looking for Gazette dates or the awards to particular Regiments.

2) The PDF scans have been copied and pasted. One of the reasons why people can't find people in the Gazette is because the OCR conversion has misread the pages. While 95% of the entries are OK, the software has a penchant for misreading capital "R"s as either "E"s or occasionally "B"s (Good job there are no Regiments with the name Royal in them!).

While I have tried to correct the most obvious misreads I haven't got a millenia spare, so some will have slipped the net. The worst problem will probably be the difference between "R. Lan. R." and "E. Lan. R.".

3) I am only human, so there is always a chance I have messed something up that would otherwise have been OK. (Interpretation of some numbers might be a bit off, for example)

Any requests?

Steve.

P.S. I'll try to sort out the 1917 lists for those who asked for the 1916 lists over the next few days. (But feel free to remind me!)

Yes, and I have added extra information in some places. At the moment, I'm concentrating on the getting the LG information indexed, but would love to build up as good a database as possible!

I will of course keep a track of sources too, unless anonymity is required!

Superb~ I 'll go with tradition every time!

Theres more than a couple as resides in my collection!,*As a Matter of interest Sjt Dockerill, along with Harry Betts is one of the only 2 Cambs Men to be awarded the DCM & Bar ;his group[Dockerill] resides in the Regimental Museum,

The MM gazetted to C H Flood** is in fact that awarded to his Brother Harry, who also was awarded a Bar to his MM,[seriously Wounded; he lost an Arm & tragically took his own life shortly after the end of the War].The Bar was also erronously Gazetted to Claude his Brother, the corrections were made in LG 1919.

Excellent Work Steve. ;)

Thanks for the extra references.

I've tried to correct the entries as far as possible and have gone up to the end of 1918 with the corrections to 1916 and 1917.

By the way, the only Cambs Regiment correction in 1916 was the change of a name from Rolfe to Rolph...

Coincidentally, found a pic of E W Preston today (6th Northants POW Dec 1915, in your collection) I assume you've seen that in your review of the papers?

Also found a pic of my Suffolks POW great-uncle. Good day today (er, yesterday)!

Yeah,

Walter Brooksbank asked for socks! They all ask for socks.... They had plenty of mufflers, but no socks. Always the same.

Wasn't even looking for him today. Just sneaked up on me. Full body pic in uniform at Doberitz POW camp, including hut number... Can't think how I missed it before! Early 1916, he'd been a POW since Le Cateau and still had three years to go. His first born boy was born 3 weeks he shipped out.

So many stories.

Steve.

Hi Steve,

Could you have a look for a Private Ernest William Fairweather, 268187, 4th/5th Bn Black Watch?

Many thanks,

David

Steve,

Any chance of a copy of the 1917 list for the Notts & Derbys to compliment the 1916 list you so graciously sent me?

This is a brilliant bit of work mate - very useful indeed (especially for those of us who find the evil LG search engine about as user friendly as a drawing pin infested toilet roll).

Okay,

Andrew (and Steve who is hinting for me to get to it, too!).

I intended to get the lists done over Christmas, but found myself babysitting for my sister whilst she had a new baby. Life getting in the way, eh?

Try to sort some lists this weekend, chaps. Can't do it tonight. Down the pub, and I know my priorities! :D

Then there is that FA Cup thingie. Except, we got knocked out by Burton, who are playing Man. United this weekend :( , while we play the mighty Rushden. (You going, Steve?)

Steve.

Hello Steve,

Please could I put in a request for my "usuals": London regiment and R.W.K.

I'm still plugging away at the 1916 London list you sent me and have recently purchased the 47th Div history, so that should help a bit in identifying some of them.

Where would we be without you to navigate the Gazette. They should hire you as a consultant!

Thank you,

Matthew

 You da telepathic man Steveo!!! Started doing it before Xmas & got through the "Bedf. R" (the smallest) section, then two little girls took the next week & a half up, sp didnt get any further. It'd be fantastic if you could bud but no rush.

Not really a footy fan to be honest mate, but I would have gone if Id have known you were there. So Rushden are "mighty" are they? Ooooh  Im living amongst giants then?

Rushden are mighty? With apologies to Rushden fans (I hold them in much higher esteem than some more celebrated clubs who perenially occupy the top of the Premiership) I was being a little sarcastic. It was a small note to Andrew whose team (look at his avatar, think of his interest and take a wild guess) knocked my team (Peterborough) out of the FA Cup last year...

Hi Steve,

I just left a message for you on your 1916 thread, then I discovered this 1917 one, so in case you aren't looking at the other one could you please send me the MM's for the Royal Scots Fusiliers (hope this isn't to big a job!).

Cheers,

Alan.
