Does any one have any further info on this chap -what I have got so far is

George Lionel Catling 'Peterborough Hotel', St. Leonards Street, Lieutenant, Royal Field Artillery. Died result of gas poisoning received in action 2.1.20 at Wye, Kent.

As far as I can tell there is no CWGC & i do not know where he is buried - I suspect he was discharged due to his injuries

Any help would be appreciated.

Is St Leonard's St now Cathedral Square, Steve?

No, Chris, other end of Cowgate. Where the big roundabout is next to Queensgate Bus Station. I think St Leonard's Street used to run along where the bus station lanes go nowadays.

Got a 1900 OS map here somewhere but can't put my hands on it.

Here we go:

I assume the Hotel is the one next to the "disused burial ground".

The Census page runs up Cowgate, finishes at St Leonards Street with the Hotel being the last one on Cowgate before the end.

Prior to the war Catling worked in the Chilean Section, Accounts, of the Antofagasta (Chile) and Bolivia Railway Company and he is listed on their Roll of Honour (see OMRS Journal, Summer 1992, pages 128 to 131). Dick Flory

Many thanks for that piece of info. Can I take it that he was working in the UK office or was he in Chile.

Steve

Thanks for the map - I can just about work out where the present site is - I notice the drill hall - who was based there

Not sure on the Drill Hall, Chris.

It wasn't the Artillery Drill Hall of 270 Brigade/ 4th EA Brigade. That's just to the right of the "S" in Queen Street where the road kinks.

Presumably it was the 4th Northamptonshire Regiment's Drill Hall, but I don't know to be honest.

Steve

According to The Birtish Army of August 1914 - An Illustrated Directory its probably the drill hall for the Norhamptonshire Yeomanry as the 4th Bn Northamptonshire Regt did not have any units in Peterborough.

Hi, Chris.

Peterborough Library trip today. This may answer your questions:

P'boro and Hunts Standard January 1920 (forgot to note down the issue)

I hope nobody's tramping around cemeteries in Rye, looking for him. He's in Ashford.

Steve.

(Might be able to get a better pic. I got the "dark" printing microfilm reader as the family from hell was on the other one.)

Chris,

Just remembered.

P & H Std January 1920 also had large (2 half-columns + pic) obituary for Lt. Samuel Vergette, ex Kings School, 1st Lincs, KIA 4-10-1917.

Is he on the Cathedral Memorial. Do you need details of him too, some time?

He is on the Cathedral Memorial & I would love to have his details when you are ready - Many thanks.

As an aside are you aware of any War Memorials in St Barnabas Church on Taverners Rd & their whereabouts now it is closed.

Went into the Cathedral to look at the Memorial today.

Nice quiet corner and a good memorial. Refreshingly few names considering that these boys may well have all been officer material.

How far through have you got?

Next time I make it to the Library, I'll take a copy of Sam Vergette's Obituary. It's right at the start of a reel so no problem.

Another man from the town centre (Priestgate). I must walk past his old house going to and from town most days...

No, I wasn't aware of the St. Barnabas Memorial. No idea where it is I'm afraid.

Yes, Chris. I would like to see that.

I'll keep an eye out for them during my travels (travails?) through the local papers....

You should have my e-mail from the clipping I sent.

Thanks,

Steve.

Chris,

Better picture of George Catling.

Still not great. Time to invest in that Digital camera, I think.

  • 2 months later...

Whilst having a look at this site it seems as though this chap has now been accepted as a War Casualty. Check out the pages with regard to Ashford's Fallen.
