Hi,

I have attached pics of my Great Grandfathers MIC and Medal Roll. He was Pte Austin Joseph Shepherd of the Lancs Fusiliers. The CWGC and SDGW list him as 1st Bttn but his MIC shows 9th Bttn. and entry into the war as Balkans on 11.07.15 His Medal Roll for the BWM and Victory show him as 1st, 3rd and 9th!!! Can somebody explain how his service in all three may have worked and more importantly which Battalion he is likely to have been in when he was KIA (1st July 1916)

Thanks!

The 9th Battalion, 11th (Northern) Division, didn't arrive in France until after the 1st day of The Somme, 1-7-1916, but was at Gallipoli.

The 3rd Battalion was a Reserve Battalion and never left the UK.

The 1st Battalion was also at Gallipoli, but more importantly for your question was part of 86th Brigade, 29th Division on July 1st at Beaumont Hamel, a mile and a bit north of Thiepval, where he is commemorated.

If I had to guess (being no expert on medal rolls) I would say 9th-3rd-1st as per the Medal Rolls.

Hope this helps,

Steve.

He is recorded as being 1st Battalion LF in Soldiers Killed On The 1st Day Of The Somme,I suspect from your information he was originally in the 1st{His number suggests a Regular} cross posted to the 9th Battalion, subsequently wounded or sick & posted to the 3rd Battalion,in Reserve, and then on to the 1st Bn,Sadly just in time for July 1st!

Snailey,

Not the 9th Battalion (my grandfathers). On the 01/07/1916 they were in camp at Kantara, Egypt.

Thanks everybody for taking the time to reply, it's all a lot clearer now....still looking for his trio and plaque though! Unlikely to find them since I was told by his grandson that they were thrown away by his daughter in law when her husband (A J Shepherd's son) died.....hope that made sense!
