marc leroux Posted 28 December , 2004 Share Posted 28 December , 2004 Chris Wight loaned a few of his books to a company to get them scanned. You can find Dugiud's Official History of the Canadian Forces in The Great War, The War Book of Upper Canada College, Toronto (1914-1919) Published 1924, and The Royal Montreal Regiment, 14th Battalion, C. Ciaran Byrne Posted 29 December , 2004 Share Posted 29 December , 2004 How does it work regarding copyright? surely it still exists for the original book? or does it? This is a topic that I have always wondered about too. I think I read that the copyright exists until fifty years after the death of the copyright holder. Thats fine if an individsual owns the copyright. If a company or organisation owns it then that is a different story.
John W Posted 29 December , 2004 Share Posted 29 December , 2004 All of the above books are out of copyright. Copyright on books exists in two forms. The authors copyright which lasts for 75 years after the authors death( I think) and the edition copyright or publishers copyright, this used to be for 25 years but again this might have changed. Basically the author always owns a financial copyright unless the explicitly sell it. THe publishers owns a copyright on the layout which is totally seperate. Confusing I know JOhn
larneman Posted 29 December , 2004 Author Share Posted 29 December , 2004 These are the basic rules. They are different for nearly every country. The EU is busy with getting all countries in EU to conform to the same rules. An example is James Joyce is copyright in the UK but not in Canada. In the United Kingdom, virtually every work created by the labour, skill and judgement of individuals and institutions is covered by copyright as long as it meets certain conditions. These pre-requisites are: The work must be original The work must be in a material form. Ideas cannot be copyrighted, but the expression of those ideas into a physical format will gain copyright. Literary Works Written works. Includes lyrics, tables, compilations, computer programmes, letters, memoranda, e-mail and WWW pages. Authors life plus 70 years after death. Anonymous/corporation authors: 70 years from year of publication. Special rules for unpublished works. Dramatic Works Plays, works of dance and mime, and also the libretto of an opera. Authors life plus 70 years after death. Crown Copyright All works made by Her Majesty or by an officer or servant of the Crown in the course of his or her duties Published work: 50 years from the end of the year when first published. Unpublished work: 125 years beyond the year it was created

Halder Posted 29 December , 2004 Share Posted 29 December , 2004 For the French speakers among us, the following has been scanned (every volume!). It's an especially useful source of letters and diaries from German/French participants, as well as some BEF, in the opening stages of the war. It was heavily used by Barbara Tuchman in her Guns of August. Happy translating... MartinWills Posted 11 January , 2005 Share Posted 11 January , 2005 I am reminded that an earlier thread identified the following site which contains a significant number of French Unit histories. Of course it can be tough reading if you don't read French! http://cecile_meunier.club.fr/historiques/index.htm The Australian War Memorial site has 110 of the 12 volumes of the Australian Official History available in digital form together with "From Anzac to Amiens" which is condensed version of the full official history. It also carries the three volume Australian medical history. The Canadian official history (Nicholson - one volume) is also available on a Canadian site. Both this and the Aussie site have been the subject of previous discussions. The WW1 Document Archive also has a significant number of volumes which have been scanned. Again previous threads give more detail. Anyone who has the Durand Group/Fougasse films "publications" will know that in addition to the video material there are discs which present other relevant material such as war diaries, maps etc. Details of these items can be found at http://www.fougassefilms.co.uk/purchasing.htm Hope this is another useful addition to the digital bibliography. No doubt pals will come up with other sources as well.

laughton Posted 30 January , 2005 Share Posted 30 January , 2005 The Canadian official history (Nicholson - one volume) is also available on a Canadian site. Both this and the Aussie site have been the subject of previous discussions. I am a great fan of the Nicholson text that deals with the CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force) and I have information on this on my web site at: http://www.censol.ca/research/greatwar/nic...t/nicholson.htm This evening I added the following, after several concerns expressed about the inability to reference this document: January 2005: I have done some trials on scanning the Nicholson text, but that is a big project. As many had made the point that the DND version does not have the same page numbers as the original text (and thus is not a good reference), I also looked at fixing that problem. To do that, I converted the PDF file to a PaperPoint (*.max) document and then converted it to Microsoft Word (*.rtf). With that, I knew I could change the page layout and format to make the PDF version then match the original document. It can be done, but that too will take a great deal of time. I gave it a shot and may continue, but as a benefit to those that have need, you can now get the book in a 3.4 MEG file in *.rtf as compared to 434 meg as a *.max file format. Here is the link: http://www.censol.ca/research/greatwar/nic...t/nicholson.rtf As an alternative, I have suggested to the CEF Forum that we Canadians approach DND (Department of National Defense, Canada) to get funding to have this project completed. That is a viable project and it can be done, I am interested in that alternative. I am sure that before we go to the next stage, we need to find out if there is a master format that we could use to do this work, thus saving hundreds of hours of scanning. In the meantime, I hope that some of you can at least use the RTF (WORD) version of the document. Richard of Canada

sandyford Posted 26 March , 2005 Share Posted 26 March , 2005 Archive CD books Canada Official History of the Canadian Forces in the Great War. August 1914 - Sept. 1915 Col. A. F. DUGUID A meticulous account by Col. Duguid with very detailed coverage of the time period involved, sourced accurately from BEF & CEF War Diaries at Divisional, Brigade and Battalion level. Excellent coverage of 2nd Ypres, which is my own interest. Detailed maps, a.m. & p.m. showing positions and movement of Battalions, based on grid references and contour maps. The maps, which are large scale and clear, can be zoomed and have also separately been scanned in 4 sections so that they can be printed out in A4 sections. Fully (successfully) searchable text and with an index and chapter markings. Kate
Borden Battery Posted 12 October , 2010 Share Posted 12 October , 2010 Archive Dot Org Website The following books are presented on Archive Dot Org and represent a growing resource of scanned texts in the public domain. A consortium of universities is scanning a wide range of older text-books including the following sample on the Great War. These texts can be down-loaded free of charge. By J. F. B. Livesay This is a remarkable on-line document - period. I would recommend any student of the Canadian Corps download this pdf. reference document which can also be “key-word” searched for specific units and events. While there are some dated patriotic comments and hyperbole at times, this 1919 document also contains some detailed and important information on the Canadian Corps' military activities during the Last Hundred Days and its interactions with both British and French army units. Information on specific Battalions and heroic individuals is extensive. This book also provides some significant insight into the detailed battle movements of specific units with some remarkable coordination of attacking battalion movements with artillery which was far more sophisticated than just the “rolling barrage”. There is also [perhaps the first] an outline of modern tank tactics which may pre-date the written theories of both Liddell-Hart and Major Fuller. Highly recommended.
