Does anyone happen to know anything of the circumstances by which this soldier from Bristol ended up as the only CWGC burial at Sirmione Communal Cemetery on the shores of Lake Garda? The accompanying documentation does not shed any light. He died on 4th October 1918 aged 23.

Hello

The register of soldiers effects say in the cause and date of death box: 4/10/18 Italy 'Drowned'.

Thanks, Ian; as I said, I had hoped to visit last October but in the end didn't get the chance. Looks like a very recently-replaced stone. As far as I can recall, it's the only CWGC burial in the entire Lake Garda area. There is an impressive German World War II cemetery at Costermano, overlooking the lake on the other side from Sirmione.
