This section of the LLT website - ***** shows rates of pay for different parts of the army. For ncos and privates in the infantry it shows different rates for the same ranks in ordinary infantry and the guards but for officers it just has a table headed 'infantry'. Does that include guards officers ie did guards and other infantry officers all get the same pay for the same rank? Can somebody explain that thanks.

The rates shown are for infantry of the line. Officers of the Foot Guards received something called "Guards pay" in addition. It was an annualised sum dependent on rank.

Thanks Ron. I thought they probably got more.

Do you know how much extra it was during ww1. Also was it paid as a lump - sum at the end of the year ie it wouldnt show up in the officers rate of pay recorded in his service record?

Guards pay was at the following annual rates:

Colonel, or lt-col commanding regiment £250

Lieutenant-colonel £200

Major £170

Captain £140

Subaltern £70.

As these rates were directly linked to rank without any other factors such as length of service, it would not have been necessary to note them specially in officers' records. They would simply have been paid out by the regimental paymaster, increasing as the officer advanced in rank.

Officers' regimental pay was issued monthly in advance, and normally credited to their accounts. There is no indication in the instructions regarding the issue of pay that Guards pay was issued on any different basis.

Thanks for the explanations. This has solved a query with a friends relative.
