FROGSMILE Posted 23 September , 2015 Share Posted 23 September , 2015 I have recently learned that this abbreviation, P and L, is sometimes an addendum to the ASC rank of Private. Forum members might like to know that it refers to those qualified in Packing and Loading, probably of horses and mules fitted with pack saddles and used particularly in Mesopotamia and Salonika. Those so qualified were paid a few pence extra.
Waggoner Posted 23 September , 2015 Share Posted 23 September , 2015 An essential skill! Both maximizes that load the animal could carry and minimizes discomfort/sores on/to the animal due to poorly balanced loads. All the best, Gary
Scalyback Posted 26 September , 2015 Share Posted 26 September , 2015 The course was available via the Royal Veterinary Corps, including mules, camels and elephants. I'm sure the exotic beasts being theory only at Molten Mowbery! So to have ASC men trained in movement of equipment, rations etc via beasts of burden would be useful for the far flung corners of empire.
