PaulC78 Posted 13 August , 2015 Share Posted 13 August , 2015 On a visit to Darwen Cemeterey yesterday I spotted this headstone for Pte. H. Bentley which has an added inscription for his widow Florence who died in 1989: I've only seen one other example of this where a family member's name has been added around the cross in this manner, the other being Pte. T. Hefferon at Prescot (St. Mary) Churchyard: http://www.prescot-rollofhonour.info/casualty-175-Thomas_Hefferon's.html Presumably these inscriptions would have been paid for and done privately rather than by the CWGC? Phil Wood Posted 13 August , 2015 Share Posted 13 August , 2015 Not seen one like this before - definitely not an official CWGC addition! It would be interesting to know what they would do when it comes time to replace the stone.

NigelS Posted 13 August , 2015 Share Posted 13 August , 2015 The headstone of DT Millard in Send churchyard also incudes his sister http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=91855#entry858083. A stone currently due for production (or recently produced) for a new commemoration (Thomas Maccabee) will include reference to his parents and brother - as put forward by the family when the opportunity arose. temptage Posted 14 August , 2015 Share Posted 14 August , 2015 There are a few in Scartho Road Cemetery, Grimsby that have other members of the family engraved on them also. In total there are the following 7 with his wife added 3 with a brother added 1 with his mother added 1 with son added 1 with daughter added and saddest of all 1 with his wife AND 6 year old daughter, who died together a year after he did. They all look like they have been added 'officially'
Andy Wade Posted 28 September , 2015 Share Posted 28 September , 2015 When we were discussing the new CWGC headstone for Private Herbert Moore the family filled in a form to add further information, including details of his 3 year old daughter Edna, who was buried in the grave 6 years before him. One of the criteria was that anyone added to the stone must have been known to the serviceman: As you can see, the inscription is at the bottom.
