Ascent Posted 19 April , 2015 Share Posted 19 April , 2015 Having found out my great grandfather was in a labour company I would like to know if anyone has a good source for the day to day tasks they would carry out and what life was like for the men in them. Thanks for any help you can provide.

themonsstar Posted 20 April , 2015 Share Posted 20 April , 2015 You could also have a read of the book "No Labour No Battle" by Starling & Lee.
sutton1987 Posted 21 April , 2015 Share Posted 21 April , 2015 No Labour,No Battle is the book for an incredibly detailed history of labour in WW1 and includes all the colonial and foreign men who provided the labour plus the origins of The Labour Corps. I borrowed a copy from my library as copies available to buy are quite pricey. Mike
Kath Posted 17 June , 2015 Share Posted 17 June , 2015 (edited) When was the 17th. Labour Company formed, please? A man joined it in 1915, before being transferred to the 18th Laour Company. Sue Light sent me this: "The 18th. was formed on on 17 July 1915 according to Mike Young's 'Army Service Corps 1902 - 1918'." Kath. "No Labour No Battle" paperback reasonably priced on Amazon at present. Edited 17 June , 2015 by Kath
wig Posted 21 June , 2015 Share Posted 21 June , 2015 This is about a letter written from the front by Private George Wiles of the Royal Engineers (I think) who was part of a Labour corps unit clearing up on the Somme https://broadsidesdotme.wordpress.com/2011/12/24/8/
