Andrew Upton Posted 25 October , 2014 Share Posted 25 October , 2014 Does anyone know when ID discs changed from metal to fibre . I don't have many of them and only 1 metal one and the owner was killed in may 1915 . The forum search engine is your friend, many previous threads on ID discs. Basics are - 1906/07, round aluminium disc introduced. Late August 1914 - round red vulcanized asbestos fibre disc introduced to replace the aluminium disc Late 1916 - second octagonal green vulcanized asbestos fibre disc introduced, to be worn with the red disc. 4thGordons Posted 25 October , 2014 Share Posted 25 October , 2014 To which you can add the often used private purchase discs. This style appears to have been common.
David B Posted 25 October , 2014 Share Posted 25 October , 2014 Interesting. I have four discs of my GF's, 2 red and 2 green. The red ones and one green are stamped with his original service number (3394) and the other green with 278394. Last one must have been issued after the re-issue of new numbers in 1916/1917.
