lee44002 Posted 19 December , 2012 Share Posted 19 December , 2012 While assembling a list of absent voters who served in the Lincoln Battalions, from around the country, this little pattern started to emerge:- 656 Cpl Aurthur Buckley 10th 41, Selby St, Wakefield 659 Sgt Herbert Bentley 10th 52, Smirthwaite St, Wakefield 670 Pte William George North Speight Depot 220, Kirkgate, Wakefield 671 Sgt Beaumont Taylor Sutcliffe 10th 16, Regent St, Wakefield 935 Cpl Joseph Murishall 10th 7, Northgate, Wakefield 942 Cpl George King 10th 16, Whitehorse Yard, Wakefield 1007 L/Cpl Frank Brook Hampshire 10th Sandall Villa, Barnsley Rd, Wakefield 1060 Pte Thomas frederick Jones 10th 14, Major St, Wakefield 1103 A/Sgt Ernest Lee Army Res, 10th Anderson St, Wakefield All original chums? but from Wakefield. ss002d6252 Posted 19 December , 2012 Share Posted 19 December , 2012 Quite a distance from Wakefield to Grimsby. There's an interesting quote here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grimsby_Chums When the call came from Lord Kitchener for volunteers, the headmaster of Wintringham Grammar School in Grimsby decided to raise a 250-strong company of former pupils which would be offered to one of the local Territorial battalions. When other Grimsby men expressed a wish to join, the process was handed over to the town council which set about recruiting sufficient men to form an entire battalion. Men were accepted from neighbouring towns such as Boston, Louth and Scunthorpe. In order to complete the battalion, a group was sent from Wakefield in Yorkshire. lee44002 Posted 19 December , 2012 Author Share Posted 19 December , 2012 The clouds clear. Pity no other voters lists have survived (apart from the obvious) for the county. Lee.
ss002d6252 Posted 19 December , 2012 Share Posted 19 December , 2012 Presumably they had a battalion nearly ready and put out a call to neighbouring areas for men - easier to complete a battalion than have several half full ones.
lee44002 Posted 19 December , 2012 Author Share Posted 19 December , 2012 According to the list of 'original' members of the 10th, these certainly qualify. Wonder why Wakefield and not Hull or Doncaster somewhere a bit nearer. Lee.
Chris Posted 20 December , 2012 Share Posted 20 December , 2012 Lee The chums were made upto strength with not only the Wakefield contingent, but there was (from memory) also a batch of approx 120 men from the West Midlands who joined the Chums in Oct 1914 to bring D Coy upto the correct numbers. I have in my mind there was also a very small batch connected to the Nottingham area, as well as less surprisingly a group of men from mablethorpe. One of my Original Grimsby Chums came from the Wakefield area. No.1045 Pte. Frederick Aveyard, wounded (not sure when!) and transferred to the MGC as No.140863. Missing from the Medal Roll as he appears on the MGC Roll. The date of joining from the SWB list ties in with the 10/Lincs numbering, 26/10/1914.
