Boy Soldiers of the Great War (revised edition) by Richard van Emden

Richard has completely revised the 2005 version of his book. There are lots of new stories including that of a 13 year old serving with the Manchesters as well as 16 year old boy who dies on meningitis the evening he walks through his mum's door. Richard has compiled a database of over 2,000 cases of boys soldiers found on Ancestry. From these he has been able to compile a whole variety of new stats. The original 2005 book was eminently readable and I am sure that the extra work, research and attention to detail will make this one even better.

Hi Ed

Sorry, I missed your post. Thank you for letting me know about your maternal uncle. How did his hand written diary end up in an auction and did you get a chance to have a look at it beforehand? As I've said, I think I will always be on the look out for new material on boy soldiers, especially if it offers an new slant on the subject.

As for your question about where you can get a copy of Boy Soldiers of the Great War, then does 'all good booshops' suffice? Apparently WH Smith took several thousand according to my publisher, which does suggest a lot of returns next year!

All best and have a good Christmas.

Richard
