I have just joined the Western Front Association, whose most recent "Stand To!" has an article about a restored plaque being rededicated at the Co-Op's Funeral premises in Salford. This prompted me to remember that, as an equally recent employee of the Co-Op, I walk past the Great War memorial in Old Bank Building twice a day. If anyone has a query about entries on it I can easily check and report back.

No idea if anyone is interested, but I always cast a glance over it as I arrive in the morning.

It might be worth photographing the Names clearly so that if anyone in the future requires info, it's already available

Plus, with today's society, some lowlife might decide to deface or nick it.

Unlikely! Access to the building is electronically controlled, and the memorial is an architrave (?) @ 20 feet high made of stone.

The photo suggestion is a good one, I shall enquire whose permission I need.

Ah! Didn't know that, as long as it's secure there's hope it will survive!

Perhaps they already have something on the Names on the Memorial, but I couldn't see it listed on the National Inventory of War Memorials.

If it isn't, then it might be a reason for you to approach them about it!

Just don't get tasered in the process!

And a very impressive memorial it is too. One of my men commemorated on it. Took a photo a few years ago and had to show my UKNIWM badge and be escorted into the building whilst I took the photo. Ralph.

Thanks for your replies - I had originally mentioned this at work as potential material for HR's monthly newsletter. It appears to have legs and may go further!

The GWF will of course get star billing if the story continues ...

Just "found" another local born casualty, worked for the co-op , cannot find my photographs of this memorial so I will endeavour to visit it again next week and photograph it . Will keep you posted . Ralph.

To all who are interested, went to see if I could get photos of the memorial in the old bank building today, not good. The CIS skyscraper building and almost every other co-op building closed down, given the amount of demolition and rebuilding going on around this area , Victoria Station etc I have developed a growing concern for this memorial and its future. Left my number and name with the only person I could find in an occupied building close by to see if I could gain access at some time in the future, hopefully they will get in contact, but not holding my breath. Am about to email the National Inventory of War Memorials to update them. Ralph.

But I can't find a link to the IWM's War Memorials Archive !!

Just go to IWM home page and in the search box top right type "War memorial XXXX" where XXX is the name of the place (without quote marks obviously). When the results come up if there are a lot then click on "War Memorials" in the "Filter" Column on the left hand side. You should then find your entry. Works for me.

John - I don't think you can browse the inventory itself but as I said above you can search the IWM site and find the entry for any of the memorials. I certainly mamaged to find the one that I submitted details for last year.

It really looks to me as though the #17 "Following withdrawal of the IWM from this project, ..." may be true and the formerly UK NIWM no longer exists, as such.

Maybe warmemorialsonline (#17) is the way to go ???

It seems to offer advice etc.

English Heritage is involved.

It does still exist. Go to http://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/search and you will find you can search for any memorial. When you get to the page for a particular memorial it give you the e-mail address that Ralph mentioned above for any queries. It also says "This record comprises all information held by IWM’s War Memorials Archive for this memorial. Where we hold a names list for the memorial, this will be included in the record during 2015." which to me implies they are working to get the data they hold in a more useable form than it once was and also to include lists of names which would be great
