huwrevans Posted 10 May , 2012 Share Posted 10 May , 2012 Here are two shells that came into my possesion from my grandfather (along with an 18 pounder case - already identified) Can anyone tell me more about them? This is stamped on the top of the shell Here's the second one - with "30mm RG53" stamped around the base
Story Posted 10 May , 2012 Share Posted 10 May , 2012 "30mm RG53" = 30mm Royal Ordnance Factory, Radway Green - 1953 used in the post-WWII 30mm Aden revolver cannon (based on the German Mk 213C). Mounted in RAF fighter aircraft unitl the 1980s.
calibre792x57.y Posted 10 May , 2012 Share Posted 10 May , 2012 You have a German 37 mm 'pom-pom' round of ammunition which, interestingly, although the case is dated 1902, the primer is dated July 1918 so is presumably a reload; along with an ornament made from a 30mm short case for an Aden Gun, an aircraft weapon adopted in the Fifties and still in use. RG is Radway Green and '53 is the date. Some one will tell you more I am sure - SW
Story Posted 10 May , 2012 Share Posted 10 May , 2012 The other shell is apparently for a 3.7cm Gruson-Hotchkiss Revolverkanone (similar to the Gatling gun in concept with five revolving cannon barrels). 1902 is the date of manufacture, http://www.flickr.co...man/5757293091/ http://www.flickr.co...man/5757298243/ The Germans needed light trench artillery to supplement their mortars, so as a temporary solution they dismantled a large number of obsolete Hotchkiss, mated each barrel with a basic breech assembly and mounted the new Grabenkanone on a simple frame with a shield – without recoil system. The last incarnations where on a wheel carriage for anti-tank use, which might explain the circa 1918 reload. http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/2543/37mmtakrheinmetall2.jpg
asanewt Posted 10 May , 2012 Share Posted 10 May , 2012 Very informative replies to topic June 8, 2010 covered the Karlsruhe 37mm fully. I think it was "can anyone help to identify these please" posted under "arms"
