Remembered Today:

Is this All Saints Church in Shefford?

Hi all,

Can anyone identify this church, taken either near the Larkhill Camp Salisbury Plains, or more likely from the Hitchin Signals Depot (Shefford skating rink) or Clifton House, Clifton (AIF Signal Engineer Training Depot). Is it All Saints Church Clifton? Also, could this be the Windmill at Shefford? Each was taken between September and early December 1917.

Many thanks, Bill

Hi Bill

It looks more like likely to be the Northern side of St Leonards at nearby Old Warden Click; also compare the roof profile with this aerial view Click. Unfortunately, as its the non entrance, less interesting side, there don't seem to be any directly comparable modern views available.

For comparison here's All Saint's, Clifton Click and an aerial Click which to my eyes doesn't look right (note the small 'tower' on top of the main tower which, if it were All Saints, ought to be visible in your picture) although, again, there don't appear to be any modern views of the opposite side readily available for comparison.

Thanks Nigel. I've trawled through these sites and after a while you see similarities and differences in every photo! One day I'll find it. Cheers, Bill
