davidfegga Posted 29 May , 2011 Share Posted 29 May , 2011 Hello all Finally got around to putting all the info I have on this brigade into a website, still a work in progress (probably always will be)! Originally designated 175 (Staffordshire) brigade, they became an Army brigade in January 1917. My interest in them stems from my Granddads service. Anyway hope it's of some interest to somebody! any comments for improvements welcome. My link Dave

ianjonesncl Posted 29 May , 2011 Share Posted 29 May , 2011 Dave Excellent site and many thanks for sharing you research with us. One of the units I am interested in were a new army brigade as well, and formed part of the 34th Divisional Artillery, the 160th (Wearside) Brigade RFA. Tyneside Chinaman Posted 29 May , 2011 Share Posted 29 May , 2011 Dave, nice work it seems 34th Division is being well represented on the research front as Philip Adams from Stoke is about to publish a history of 160 (Wearside) Brigade. Have you looked at the 34th Division Memorial Volume at the IWM, When the original div history was being written they collected lots of photo's of the various units of the division. I used it when I needed photo's of the Tyneside Irish, expensive but well worth getting the copies. regards John

rflory Posted 30 May , 2011 Share Posted 30 May , 2011 I just checked out the 175th Brigade, RFA website and it is excellent! Are those of you who research the 34th Division familiar with The Chequers: A Yearbook of the 34th Division? I have nine of them from the 1930s and 1940s and they give excellent information on the various units of the division and have very nice photos. topher2447 Posted 30 June , 2013 Share Posted 30 June , 2013 Dave, you have done a great job. My Grandfather served with 175 Brigade Ammunition colunm as a shoeing smith. I have all his war records and they tie in with the all the dates and locations. I would like your permission to copy and print off the war records that you have included on your site, the reason I ask is that his Son and daughter are still alive and they would love to read it. My Grandfather was called Benjamin Dunham and he came from newcastle upon tyne.

topher2447 Posted 5 July , 2013 Share Posted 5 July , 2013 Dave, I would have liked a chat by phone but I see you live in OZ. Great country I visited in 2004 when the exchange rate was 2.5 dollars to the pound. I would like to converse with you via email rather on here. Could you email me back on chridunham@aol.com just for chatting sake, as I mentioned my Grandfather served with 175, My Father served in the RAF during WW2. I served with the Royal Artillery 1965 to 1969. My son also served with 19th Regiment RA. You might be interested in the web site I built for my old Regiment, it was disbanded in 1977. www.42regt.com Regards.... Chris

Guest Posted 29 February , 2020 Share Posted 29 February , 2020 Hi there my 2x great grandad Frank Spencer of Wolverhampton 1882-1935 was in the 175 RFA signing up aged 32 in December 1914 as a gunner, how ever in later records his rank is S/S being transcribed on ancestery as a Staffordshire sergeant? On the photo on davidfeggas site he seems to be the man seated on a chair front row second from left? would anyone have a higher quality scan so I can see it clearer? kind regards

Welcome to the forum, Dave Typical Ancestry nonsense I'm afraid. It can sometimes mean Staff Sergeant but I suggest here it probably means Shoeing Smith- does that sound plausible ? Was he a blacksmith pre or postwar ? Charlie edit- I see his service record L/31429 and it definitely says Shoeing Smith, to which he was appointed in UK 21/4/15. It also says he was posted in UK to 154 Bde RFA 1/11/15 and then went overseas 28/11/15. His Discharge was with 175 Bde RFA but there is no note of when he might have transferred. What is the date of the 175Bde photo? Have you seen that FindmyPast have a Pensioner's Record card for him here Edited 1 March , 2020 by charlie962
