Hello,

Is somebody know this periscope that a friend found on a secondhand market?

I think that it is for Vickers machine gun but I have never seen picture of it.

If somebody have pictures or information...

Thanks a lot, GARAU

Never seen one 'in the flesh' before. Fantastic find.

Hi GARAU

That would be a 'Hyposcope, Vickers .303-in. Gun, Mark I'. An excellent find and I have never seen another (even of a later type) on the collectors' market. A description of them is contained in the Handbook for the Vickers Machine Gun published in 1918. I have a PDF version of that manual available for free download on my website (link below).

If your friend ever wants to find another home for it, then I am sure I could oblige.

Regards

Richard

Very nice too. I have seen another couple but not for some time now.

Your friend has certainly turned up some nice pieces!

The Overbank Adaptor - Goldsmith only gives 1180 of these being made. Your friend is a very lucky lucky so and so...

Hi GARAU,

There are some levers that attach to the gun trigger and the periscope can be used to aim the gun and then the levers fire it whilst he is holding the handles (which is what the grips are on the back of the box).

There are some photos of it being used (but not in action) and I will try to find them for you.

Very nice items.

Regards

Richard

Andrew,

I wasn't going to copy the pages of the book (thought it might be a copyright issue on the forum) but I'll try to find my original copies of the photographs and link to them for GARAU.

I'll get to do this tomorrow or Thursday now.

Regards

Richard
