I think it's a very nice idea. I signed up a couple of days ago hence the photo request I have made on the photo-wants subforum. I chose a young Digger by the name of Roy Finney who was KIA on 5 September 1916. I'm currently trying to track down a photo of him in Australia with the intention of leaving it at his grave as a tribute. I posted a message on the Queensland rootsweb list late last night and I have been overwhelmed by the offers of help and good wishes. If I can track down a family member of his who is interested then I will gladly hand the web page over to them to maintain.

I agree. I think something like this could be very popular. However, one thing I would change is that each name allocated would be randomly generated once the branch of the services had been selected i.e Army, Navy or RAF. I would think that most people in the UK would quite naturally either look up their relatives or someone with the same surname first. I can imagine the amount of mail the website administrator would receive along the lines of 'who is this who has picked my Great Grandfather/Uncle? etc..'

The BBC, in the run up to the 90th anniversary of the Armistice did something similar by a series of text messages and I thought it was a really interesting exercise and an encouragement to delve further into the service history of the man allocated.

Perhaps this would be a good site to aim at school children? it could only help in understanding the internet as a research tool and get more kids into libraries.

Any thoughts?

What a great idea! I have a class of 30 students in Northern Queensland who can be involved. A great task indeed.

Well this proved a worthwhile project for me....I chose a man with the same surname as another family member who served....only to find out that he was actually my man's brother! I missed him as I thought it was extremely unlikely that a Queenslander would have been a member of the 20th Battalion.

It is a fairly easy straightforward task to clean up that photo but if you want it done properly it is better if there is a

higher resolution version to work with. That will print better! If no-one gets in before me, just PM me and I will send you my email to send the original file to.

Cheers
