kevinrowlinson Posted 12 November , 2010 Share Posted 12 November , 2010 Hi Charlie and welcome, Your grandfathers number would indicate someone being sent to No. 4 Depot, Gt. Yarmouth, on or around the 20th May 1916. From here he would normally have been sent on to a siege or heavy depot for training. 375th Sge. Bty was formed near the beginning of February 1917 at Prees Heath. I have the battery leaving England on the 18th August 1917 and arriving France on the 20th (taken from gunners records). Not sure that is correct as most would have arrived the following day. I am surprised he did not join an earlier battery and arrived in France before the 375th was formed. Did you get his unit from the medal rolls? You can find its war dairy at the Nat. Archives under http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=-2238705&CATLN=7&Highlight=%2C375&accessmethod=0 . Kevin Hi Kevin, nice to meet you; and thanks for the information. I have been given a few old diaries that my grandad used as a record of his buisiness affairs during this time, (mainly money transactions i'm affraid), but on the military side, Skegness is mentioned......does this make sense? There is sposmatic info in the said diaries, but i have not really gone through them in any detail. I willl now check on the actual location names mentioned. Bex hill is also mentioned? I will let you know. I also have a range of photo's but as a new boy, i'm not sure of how i attach them, if indeed you caan??? Thanks again Charlie
kevinrowlinson Posted 13 November , 2010 Share Posted 13 November , 2010 Hi Charlie, Can't say that Skegness rings any bells, but Bexhill was where "B" Siege Depot and No.1 Re-enforcing Siege Depot was located, although moving at the start of 1918. If you could write a time line with places from the diary you may be able to see his route to the 375th Sge Bty whilst in England, and then obtain the war diary to see where he would have been abroard. Kevin Hi Kevin, i will have a good look at the diaries and see if he mentions any dates with locations. Unfortunately i'm currently out of the UK working and do not have the diaries with me, so it will be a couple of weeks before i can come up with any answers. In the meantime i will certainly look at the units war diary with interest. Charlie
Charlie Ede Posted 20 December , 2010 Author Share Posted 20 December , 2010 Hi Kevin, sorry for the delay to answering your last, but i had only just arrived back to the UK. I have now managed to look at my grandads diary and it mentioned a lodging, 83774 Gnr G Ede, c/o Mrs Motts, 5 Nelson Rd North, Gt Yarmouth; and, No2 Camp, Prees Heath, Whitechurch Salop; Paull Point, Puall, Nr Hull; Siege School, North Camp, Aldershot; Lin Town, Lydd, Kent; InchKeith and as metioned in another email, Bexhill. All of these locations he spent time at because he records receiving his 5 shillings a week in his financial section during 1916/17. I will attach the 375 Bty unit photo and my grandad Troop photo in my next email.

JeremyMorton Posted 31 December , 2010 Share Posted 31 December , 2010 Kevin/Charlie I understand my grandfather (Maj Guy Morton) commanded 375 Siege Battery and I would be very interested in seeing any related photographs if that is possible. Some research is currently being done by someone in Australia and the family does not have any photographs of him as a serving officer. I am sure he would be very happy to share any information he may have found out to date Thanks Jeremy

If you have access to a scanner you scan them and save them to a computer and then attach them in an email as a jpeg. The only 'size' issue may be the max single file size allowed but you may be able to manage that by reducing the photo quality Let me know. If theres a problem I can always let you have a live.co.uk address J
Charlie Ede Posted 2 January , 2011 Author Share Posted 2 January , 2011 Hi Jeremy, i have the photo's already on my computer but because there is a 100bit size restriction, even when reduced, they are still too large to attach to this site. My friend has told me that he has a way of reducing the size of the amount of pixels on these photo's that should then enable me to attach the to the site.....unfortunately he is away at the moment but should be back in the next few days. Do you know when your grandfather was the Battery Commander, because the BC i have on a Battery Orbat my grandfather had, has a Major Horsley commanding? I am not 100% when he was, but if he was it was very late on - I am going on some info the researcher passed on when he contacted me. However I am pretty sure Major Horsley is also related as my grandfather married Clare Horsley - he is one of her brothers. I'll need to check that out thru some paperwork I have here. Charlie Ede Posted 27 January , 2011 Author Share Posted 27 January , 2011 Hi all, i have attached a photo of a Troop from 375 Siege Bty, RGA and if possible would like anyone to give me an idea of what size (number of troops), would a troop from this type of Bty normally would consist of. My grand father i believe, is on the extreme right on the bottom row and the officer is believed to be the Troop Commander and Bty 21/c, Capt Guy Morton. Also, does anyone recognise or know of/have any information concerning the other individuals on this photo or on the Bty photo previously posted. kevinrowlinson Posted 29 January , 2011 Share Posted 29 January , 2011 Charlie, I think it would be very difficult to identify any gunner in the photo unless a forum member can identify a relative. I can give you a few names of gunners who served with the 375th Sge. Bty. and whose records are available. They either joined on formation, or were later re-enforcements. I suppose the most likely location for the photos is Prees Heath just after the battery was formed. 60626 Weatherley, Samuel 98358 Pinder, William 112209 Blenkarn, Arthur 123190 later 4491/344278 Clyde RGA Kaye, Ernest 123256 Kew, Alfred 125198 later 6558/365548 Nth. Scottish RGA Grimsdale, William 133350 Abbott, Bealey 134587 Elliott, William 148809 was 50005 RFA Black, Richard William Kevin
Charlie Ede Posted 30 January , 2011 Author Share Posted 30 January , 2011 Hi Kevin, yes, i hoped that someone on the GWF maybe could have recognised individuals on the photo's, Its a long shot, but you never know. I do actually hold an orbat of the Bty but i'm not sure if it is at the end of the war or some other time. It does highlight those who were kiled and wounded but does not give any details of when or where as these details i have yet to research. The name Pinder is not on the orbat i have and does not appear on the casualty list.
