Remembered Today:

Great Western Railway men

rendellers

By chance I came across this website http://www.carlscam.com/chester/gwrmem.htm and from it was able to extract a list of men from Newton Abbot who were recorded on the memorial roll.

Delving further I came across this upload to Flikr By the Swindon Local Studies Collection and in less than 2 hours have found pictures of 12 of 23 men from my list some of whom are on the war memorial I am researching.

This could be a real treasure trove for anyone reaching men in the areas of stations served by the GWR

Lindsey

Talking of Newton Abbot, on one of the platforms at the station there is a memorial board to all GWR men who died in the Great War, listed by station/department. (Well, there was 18 months ago.)

Eighteen months ago the board was attached to the wall of the building on the platform from which fast trains to London depart.Head down the platform to the Gents and the board is on your right.

If one knows where to look, I'm told, one can still see damage to buildings caused by a German bombing raid on the station in the Second World War.
