Woody Posted 16 August , 2009 Share Posted 16 August , 2009 I am researching Georger Bewsher Atkinson who died at home (I think) who was a member of the 53rd Northumberland Fusiliers. I can't find much info about him - I am stuck on where to go next - can't find much info about the 53rd Northumberland Fusiliers - does anyone kwown anything of their movements? What I have so far is the 1901 and 1911 census and CWGC entry. I the only GB Atkinson I can see on the death indexes died in Southwell in Notts which doesn't seem right George was a member of the Boys' Brigade and dies just over a week before the end of the war. I am hoping to use his story wih some local young people for rememberance Sunday this year. Any help on the 53rd Northumberland Fusiliers or why he might have died in Southwell Notts or ideas for further research routes greatly appreciated Thanks Woody

jay dubaya Posted 19 August , 2009 Share Posted 19 August , 2009 Looking at what David has revealed I think the finger points to Spanish Flu, I just had a look through my Clipstone Camp booklet which contains the following snippet 'the large number of deaths in July and November may have ben due to a particulary virulent flu epidemic'. There are also a few November burials at Forest Town (St Alban) Churchyard which list 'pneumonia and influenza' as the cause of death, Jon
Woody Posted 25 August , 2009 Author Share Posted 25 August , 2009 Thanks to all who replied - apologies for lateness in replying been away for a few days. His death certificate arrived yesterday and it shows that he died from Pneumonia - consistent with Spanish Flu at the Clipston Camp Military hospital. David Porter Posted 25 August , 2009 Share Posted 25 August , 2009 Thanks for the confirmation Woody. I was really struck by this event after discovering so many 18 year olds dying in one place - it's kind of surreal. Unfortunately it appears it was repeated in many camps around the country. I hope you now have plenty to talk about on Remembrance Sunday.
