Remembered Today:

Médaille Militaire

Hi,

I posted on this subject in a previous topic, specifically about a Connaught Rangers man. I'm posting now as a general enquiry.

Does anyone know if there is available a complete list of the non-French men awarded the "Médaille Militaire"? Also citations if available?

"The French Médaille Militaire was first instituted in 1852. It was issued to non-commissioned officers or enlisted personnel who distinguished themselves by acts of bravery in action against an enemy force. Commissioned officers are normally not elligible. The Médaille Militaire is one of rarest French decorations to be bestowed upon foreigners."

The London Gazette has some lists of the award but I get the impression that these are not complete.

Cheers

John

There is not much info around on the Net. Maybe you could write to:

Anglo-French FHS

31 Collingwood Walk

Andover

Hampshire

SP10 1PU

who may put you in touch with the relevant Government Dept

I would like to get a copy of the complete list if possible. But for now I'm interested in all the Irish Regiment men who were awarded the medal. And for a friend the award to R/15457, Cpl. John Cameron, Kings Royal Rifle Corps.

Cheers
