Skipman Posted 28 December , 2008 Share Posted 28 December , 2008 Back of photo says Sgt Bange. I think it's John Bange, or Joseph. Have found a john bange RASC MIC, Sgt demoted to Cpl. I think this must be taken after the war, he was also a piper, and maybe mentioned in despatches . Any thoughts on the Uniform, the year, and what medal is that? J T Gray Posted 28 December , 2008 Share Posted 28 December , 2008 And, judging by the Euphorbia behind his left shoulder, I'd say he's in South Africa - or at least some part of Africa. Although they are found worldwide (I think one or two species are even native to Britain), the core of their distribution is Africa. This assumes it's not a photographers prop! gnr.ktrha Posted 28 December , 2008 Share Posted 28 December , 2008 Hello, He is a sergeant in the Black Watch and has probably served with the 1st battalion during the Boer War, as they all recieved a 4 bar QSA, but not the KSA. I would also suspect he has then transferred to the 2nd Battalion, who went and served in India after the Boer War and did not come back to Europe until 1914. The 1st battalion after the Boer War came back to the UK and did not go overseas until 1914. The type of tunice he is wearing was only worn in countries like India. I wonder who he is? Any details on the back or a photographers name? Regards, Stewart
Guest Posted 28 December , 2008 Share Posted 28 December , 2008 Hi Stewart . It says Sgt Bange, on back, who was a character who lived in Aberfeldy after ww1. Don't know much more. 1st name John or Joseph, found John Bange RASC Mic ? who knows.

gnr.ktrha Posted 2 January , 2009 Share Posted 2 January , 2009 Hello, I have checked the Black Watch medal roll and can't seem to see him on it. I also had a wee look through the Military history of Perthshire, but he does not seem to be in it either. I will let you know if any thing turns up. Tom A McCluskey Posted 2 January , 2009 Share Posted 2 January , 2009 Skipman, There is a 7306 Pte A Bange on the Supplementary South African Medal Roll - 2nd Bn The Black Watch. As Stewart says, the uniform of the chap in the photo looks like 2nd Black Watch, India. Aye Tom McC
