I have just stumbled upon this thread and was really interested to know more.

My great uncle served with the 20th Halton Rifles in the CEF and came back to Britain (where he was born) in 1916. His battalion was then disbanded and he joined the RFC. He was killed 30.12.17 in the sinking of the Aragon on its way to Egypt.

A long shot, I know, but I have not been able to find out what my great uncle did whilst in Britain in 1916/17 and I saw mention of Canadians being stationed in Kinmel. Does anyone know whether any Ontario regiments were stationed in Kinmel?

My family are from North Wales, so it'd be nice to find out if my great uncle was stationed near to his family.

Forum member Broznitsky is the one you need, specialising in the Canadian EF link with Kinmel and the war in general.

From a Welsh point of view, the Canadians took Kinmel as a transit camp in late 18/19. The 20+ sub camps each holding a battalion strength intake of a 1000 men were named after various Canadian regions, and one was known as Camp Ontario. All soldier names remained in the Canadian Army documentation. In other words here in Wales we have absolutely no idea who they were! Perhaps Broznitsky could refer you onto the proper authority in Canada today where such details may be found.

Thanks Geraint for your kind words.

DrFuentes, what is your ancestor's name and regimental number?

The Halton Rifles were a militia regiment and as such were not an infantry battalion.

Have you ordered his complete service records from Library & Archives Canada?

His service with the RFC would be held in another repository in England.

Peter in British Columbia
