Trebrys Posted 11 October , 2006 Share Posted 11 October , 2006 I've been researching into the story of Lt. John Savin Jones-Savin (late of the 11th Batt. RWF) who died whilst serving with the 22 Div. Cyclist Corps in Salonika during the winter of 1916-1917 before he died somehow. But I am unsure as to what the Army Cyclist Corps did! I don't want to sound stupid, but what DID they do? And what would they have done there? It sounds as though they were messengers of some sort! Any suggestions? Trebrys. gporta Posted 11 October , 2006 Share Posted 11 October , 2006 Trebrys, The initial idea for the Army Cyclists was to be a cavalry on wheels. Eventualy, they offered diverse services as messengers, scouts, military police, Home Defence in the UK, among others. This recent thread may be helpful. There have been some more threads about Cyclists (i'll check those later). Gloria
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 11 October , 2006 Share Posted 11 October , 2006 They were scouts, messengers, and used as light cavalry. There are some references to them in Alan Wakefield & Simon Moody, 'Under the Devils's Eye: Britain's Forgotten Army in Salonika 1915-1918'

gporta Posted 14 October , 2006 Share Posted 14 October , 2006 Trebrys, Mind you, I've only selected the threads which i though could give -more- interesting information, but there were no less than nine pages of threads where Cyclists were mentioned to a greater or lesser degree. So when you have time, check it with the search facility (there might be a thread which I have not included which may have relevant information to your particular research (I haven't searched for "Salonika" but no doubt there must be a sensible number of threads dealing with the campaign). Best of luck in your research Gloria
