Dave.

Have you seen this article on the BBC website?

Not specifically about William but may point you in the direction of more info.

There appears to be some disagreement over the siting of a memorial to some of these men in Azerbaijan as per this website.

William Arthur Rigby’s occupation on enlistment was clerk and he gave his address as Korchester Grove, Chiswick, London. His rank in the RNACD was Petty Officer and he served in No 1 Squadron of L-L’s force. He was awarded the Silver St Stanislaus Medal (not the Cross of St George) for his services in the Caucasus and Rumania. He transferred to the MGC on 18/1/18 and probably served in the Duncar Brigade in northern Iraq and Persia, the unit to which most of L-L’s men were transferred.

An excellent account, if you have not already come across it, of Locker-Lampson’s armoured cars is Bryan Perrett and Anthony Lord’s The Czar’s British Squadron published by William Kimber, London, 1981.

Hi Dave,

Reports from Locker Lampson to the Admiralty are held at the Fleet Air Arm Museum. They run to about 120 pages and include comments on the Russian Royal Family, Rusputin etc together with an eye witness account of the Petrograd revolution. Probably not anything about your relative but very interesting.

I take it back as you have proof that he received the St George's Cross. I will amend my records accordingly. It would appear then that he received two Russian decorations. The memo also confirms that he served in the Duncar Bde, DAC in the signature block standing for Dunsterforce Armoured Car Bde.

For his campaign medals, they should be listed on the RN roll in ADM 171/113. Try this MIC. He would have to have been moved fast to get more than a pair.

Igor

Ernest Frederick Hedge resided before the war at 76 Links Road, Tooting, London SW and was a motor mechanic by trade. He had served with the East Surreys and originally enlisted in the 9th South Staffordshires in 1914, but transferred to the RNAS in September 1914. He served in No 2 Sqn of the Russian ArmouredCar Force and was also awarded the St Stanilaus Medal for services while working directly for the Russians in the area of Kandalasksha during the period 3 February - 18 March 1916. He transferred to the Mahcine Gun Corps on 19 January 1918 and served in B Squadrion of the Dunsterforce Armoured Car Brigade in Mesopotamia.

I hope this fills in a few more gaps.
