MBrockway Posted 30 May , 2009 Share Posted 30 May , 2009 The officer in the photograph is definitely Major H F M Warne. Simon - Can I ask where this photo's from? The Regimental History perhaps? Cheers, Mark
high wood Posted 30 May , 2009 Share Posted 30 May , 2009 Mark, the photograph is from a booklet entitled: 2/15th Battn County of London Regiment. Prince of Wales Own Civil Service Rifles. Produced and printed by The Art Reproduction Co, Ltd 3&4 Plough Court, Fetter Lane, E.C. The publication is not dated but I would guess 1915 at the latest. I imagine that it is an extremely rare booklet. It lists the original members of the 2/15th battalion by company and gives each man's service number and specialism e.g. 4985 Wainwright. W. C. Battalion bomber. 3371 Wheeler J. F. Salvage Corps. There are photographs of the officers, the regimental staff, Warrant Officers and Sergeants, A-D companies, the signalling section, the machine gun section, Transport attached, the Bombing platoon, the transport section and a few views of the camp. Simon. Simon, Wienand, Mike Shingleton, TF Mills and I have been working for some time on this photo: [picture courtesy of TF Mills] which we think is a photo taken at the formation of the 2/15th CSRs in August 1914 of the warrant officers transferred to form the staff of the new battalion. The location is the courtyard of Somerset House. Captain Parish, the Adjutant of the 1st battalion, is in the front row (see detail higher up) with RSM Freemantle (att Scots Guards) on his rhs. Is this photo by any chance in your booklet? And if so is there any further info about it? We have drawn a frustrating blank so far - we would be extremely grateful for any help! Cheers, Mark
high wood Posted 31 May , 2009 Share Posted 31 May , 2009 Mark, your picture is not in my booklet. I will happily post a picture of the officers and Warrant officers and NCO's that are so that you can compare faces. If you pm your email address I will send high resolution pictures. Simon. grahamhollox Posted 2 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 2 June , 2009 The 'i.W.' in Münster i.W. means 'in Westfalen' (in Westphalia) and merely serves to distinguish it from other places in Germany of the same name (like Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Newcastle-under-Lyme). Thanks Mick. I should have recognised that!!!! Graham

high wood Posted 4 June , 2009 Share Posted 4 June , 2009 It is a postcard in my collection. The back of which says, "Cpl Cook E Surreys". I presume that he must have been a PoW in the camp but I have never been able to positively identify him as there were more than a few Corporal Cooks in the East Surrey Regiment. Paul Nixon Posted 12 July , 2009 Share Posted 12 July , 2009 High Wood, and others, photos of the 2/15th London officers, and various shots of the 2/15th Londons in the UK, appear in the Illustrated War News for June 1915. I've just scanned and posted the photographs elsewhere: 2/15th Londons 1915 2/15th London Regiment officers Paul

Guest paulwoollard Posted 26 November , 2010 Share Posted 26 November , 2010 I appreciate this thread is a little cold now but these are links to a picture I've put on Flickr (as I cant get them small enough) it purports to be from 1919 but I suspect its earlier. My interest in the CSR is my great-great Uncle was Sgt Halbert Leonard Smith 1/15th who was KIA at Bourlon in the counter attack led by Lt Col Segrave on 30/11/1917 and mentioned in the 1921 book. http://www.flickr.com/photos/e_tan_e_epitas/5197343033/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/e_tan_e_epitas/5197346181/in/photostream/ cheers Paul
