John Flaherty
John Flaherty was another name that was hard to trace. It was only a long process of elimination that lead me to a possible identification. Please see this recent forum thread:
His connection to Ibstock seems slight. He does appear in the 1911 census living at 123 PRETORIA ROAD IBSTOCK LEICESTER as a lodger. He is described as a miner, born Longton Staffs of 21 years age.
His RND record summary from the Jack Clegg Memorial Database adds very little:
Name: John Flaherty
Service Branch: Royal Marine Light Infantry
Unit: 2nd Royal Marine Bn.
Rank: Private
Death Date: 7 Jan 1916
Cause of Death: Killed in action
Burial: Skew Bridge Cemetery, Helles (Gi 14)
Service History: Embarked RM Brigade 23/10/15 (joined Bn. about 22/11/15).
Service Number: PO/934/S
Notes: Son of Mrs. Ann Flaherty, of Elmare St., Rugeley, Staffordshire.:
I'm not hopeful that there is anymore at the Fleet Air Arm Museum. As a small footnote, I have since learnt that Michael Dolye's book has the same identification for J.Flaherty.
There was one other clue, which I have yet to talk about.
