The Dunnicliffe Trail

There were no obvious candidates for "A.Dunnicliffe", and no 1911 census to check when I first looked for him in 2008. The CGWC entry for an A.Dunnicliffe is of a Liverpool man.

There was an entry in 1916 Kelly directory for a "Dunnicliffe John B, Butcher" trading in Ibstock high street. Was that a relation? And there was this entry in the 1901 census for a "Dunnercliffe" family in Ibstock:

Alfred W 11 years old. Born derby

This seemed to tally with an entry in FreeBMD for the man's birth

Births Mar 1890

Dunnicliffe Alfred Walter Burton 6b367

I did find a Medal card for a "Dunnicliffe, Alfred W Corps Regiment No Rank Army Service Corps M2/153353 Acting Corporal"

But I beleive it is the surviving four pages of pension records for a "Alfred Walter Dunnicliffe" born in Derby which identifies the man. The only remaining question is about his death.

When the 1911 cenus became available it confimrmed that for males named A.Dunnicliffe in Leicestershire, only one was resident in Ibstock and born in Derby.

1911 census

DUNNICLIFFE ALBERT M 1896 15 Ashby de la Zouch Leicestershire

DUNNICLIFFE ARTHUR M 1893 18 Ashby de la Zouch Leicestershire

DUNNICLIFFE ALFRED M 1890 21 Market Bosworth Leicestershire

Sadly, Alfred W Dunnicliffe's nok his mother Ellen, appears to have died as early as 1919.

Deaths Jun 1919 )

DUNNICLIFFE Ellen 47 Mt.Bosworth 7a 80
