kildaremark Posted 12 June , 2008 Share Posted 12 June , 2008 Anyone know what the rank of this man is - I believe him to be an RGA officer. Apologies for the poor quality. This is the best I could do. Thanks Mark
Ron Clifton Posted 12 June , 2008 Share Posted 12 June , 2008 Hello Mark Almost impossible, I'm afraid. His rank badges would be on his cuffs, which are inconveniently behind his back, or possibly (if later in the war) on his shoulders, where the angle is wrong to see them clearly. The best I can say from the style of his cap is that he is probably major or below. Sorry! Can you get a clearer enlargement of his shoulder, or look at the original with a magnifying glass? Peter Doyle Posted 12 June , 2008 Share Posted 12 June , 2008 Is it me or does his tunic have a stand and fall collar, buttoned to neck? In which case, best he could be would be a warrant officer, unless he was wearing the earlier pattern OSD. Otherwise it's my eyes.... kildaremark Posted 12 June , 2008 Author Share Posted 12 June , 2008 Here he is from two other angles, one in a bit of daylight...!
Peter Doyle Posted 12 June , 2008 Share Posted 12 June , 2008 I still reckon he's of warrant officer grade (they also wore Sam Browns), as I think its a stand & fall collar. Could be wrong though.... Peter
kildaremark Posted 12 June , 2008 Author Share Posted 12 June , 2008 By Warrant Officer - do you mean the Battery Sergeant Major?
Peter Doyle Posted 12 June , 2008 Share Posted 12 June , 2008 That would sound OK - I'm not up on my Artillery rank equivalents, so I'm taking about the most senior NCOs, who were granted some extra uniform priviledges, which would include officer-grade tailoring and Sam Brown belts, while still having the closed collar. FROGSMILE Posted 13 June , 2008 Share Posted 13 June , 2008 [quote name='kildaremark' post='938195' date='Jun 12 2008, 08:25 PM' Here he is from two other angles, one in a bit of daylight...! A Warrant Officer/Sergeant Major depending on whether after 1915. He is not an officer, the 'skirt' of his tunic is far too short for that. CSMMo Posted 13 June , 2008 Share Posted 13 June , 2008 Not much difference in ranks at the top. Company Quartermaster Sergeant = Battery Quartermaster Sergeant. Company Sergeant Major = Battery Sergeant Major. Even though the next level up was a Brigade and not Regiment, they were called Regimental Sergeant Major, etc. at Brigades and Divisional Ammunition Columns. For junior OR's, Privates = Gunners. Lance Corporals = Bombardiers. Mike Morrison
