Guest stevenbec Posted 16 February , 2004 Share Posted 16 February , 2004 Mates, I am trying to iD a number of french soldiers killed during the last days of the war in Palestine. I did notice some time ago that there is now a french webb site to check names of the French Dead. Do you know if it can work by dates or Regiments as well as by names? Since I know their regt and dates but not any names. Thanks for any help S.B

Terry Denham Posted 16 February , 2004 Share Posted 16 February , 2004 Steve I have the names of a small number of French troops killed throughout 1918 in Palestine including some in the last months - those who lie in CWGC cemeteries in Israel. I'll look out the names and post them tomorrow.
Guest stevenbec Posted 17 February , 2004 Share Posted 17 February , 2004 Thanks Terry, I only know one confirmed name and that is, Julien Pierre Couratin Regt No 168 Marshal de Logis RMMC. The records show he died in Oct 1918. If you can confirm this bloke with date and cause that would also help. The regt I am after is the RMMC and the dates are late 1918. I tried the French dead site but I can not look for any men by Regt or date. Thanks for your help S.B

paul guthrie Posted 17 February , 2004 Share Posted 17 February , 2004 Is best translation mort pour la france dead or died for France? Ever notice another verb on village memorials to civilians, looks like assasinated by the Germans? Also, once saw interesting French burial with died for France on the headstone, but his dates of service were all Vichy era, may be Wimereux but not sure. Terry Denham Posted 17 February , 2004 Share Posted 17 February , 2004 Steven Below as promised are the names of the few French army men who are buried in CWGC cemeteries in Israel. I hope these help. CWGC do not usually record in their database the ranks or units for Foreign Nationals in their care. Guest stevenbec Posted 19 February , 2004 Share Posted 19 February , 2004 Thanks For the list Terry, I see 90% of these names are not on the French dead site shown above. Is there a reason they would not be on it? The two men (I think) I did find; Jules Aubanel (not Jean) and Labadi Ben Tahar appear to have served in one of the two Infantry Regts in that threate. I surpose we may never know the men who died with the RMMC. S.B
Annie Posted 19 February , 2004 Share Posted 19 February , 2004 In the list of Terry DENHAM: Jean Paul ALVERNHE, 2ème Tirailleurs Algériens, dead 02.02.18 Joseph ARDITI, 15ème RI, dead 21.09.18 Francis Emilien COLONNIER, 115ème RIC, dead 20.10.17 Albert PONT, 115ème RIC, dead 15.06.17 ............. It's more difficult for the arabian name. Annie

CROONAERT Posted 20 February , 2004 Share Posted 20 February , 2004 Also, once saw interesting French burial with died for France on the headstone, but his dates of service were all Vichy era, Paul. I've come across quite a few of these. Even if they did die for Vichy France, they still did "die for France". It's only politics! (for this reason the 1940 issue Croix de Guerre (green and black striped ribbon) - the "Vichy C.de G.", is still recognised as an official issue). When it all comes down to it, for the majority of the rural population, all that happened was a change of government! Dave.
