Recommended Posts

Please could someone help me. I am trying to find the citation for the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to Private 31363 A H Bird of the 18th Lancashire Fusilliers. I have been told this was for action in 1918, but I cannot confirm that.

Any information gratefully received.

Best Wishes

Nick - you can access the London Gazette at www.gazettes-online.co.uk.

You might have to try different variations on the name but you probably need to put a period in after the initial (as F. Bloggs)

Here’s your man:

31363 Pte. A.H. Bird (New Cross)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He attacked and captured an enemy machine-gun single-handed, killing the team. He then endeavored to gain touch with the left and killed several of the enemy he met. He destroyed a trench mortar with a bomb, and all through the action he showed fine courage and determination, and was of the greatest assistance to his officers. (LG: 30.10.18)

Please be in touch if I might be of further assistance.

Regards

David

Alan, John, and David many thanks for your help. I am most grateful. It is almost getting to the stage where you can guarantee that someone on this web site will have the answer.

Many thanks
