ozchats Posted 8 June , 2008 Posted 8 June , 2008 Hi My grandfather Thomas Cockburn served in the ASC as a shoeing smith. He was based at Chelsea Barracks until 1910 and then transferred to Woolwich. Did the Army Service Corp have permanent barracks in woolwich? I know nothing of his army records but as he served in france during WW1, and in 1921 he was a Corp in the RASC still living in Woolwich.Any advice re obtaining his service history would be appreciated. Geoff
eviltaxman Posted 8 June , 2008 Posted 8 June , 2008 Geoff, There are 2 medal index cards to 2 different Thomas Cockburns in the ASC...... both down as drivers. One of 'em has a service on Ancestry and I'll have a look to see if there's any Woolwich connections. I'll also check for family names and pop them on here to see if it's the right chap. Les
eviltaxman Posted 8 June , 2008 Posted 8 June , 2008 Looks like he was born approx 1885. Occupation - Traction engine driver Full name Thomas John Cockburn. NoK - Elizabeth (wife) Kids - Alice, John, Thomas & a female I can't make out. Any clues there? Les
grantowi Posted 8 June , 2008 Posted 8 June , 2008 Geoff, In the Great war, 80,000 people worked at Woolwich. If he was ASC, then he was possably a driver carting munitions around. Grant Ps in 1899 a football team was formed called "Dial Square FC", which many years later metemorpthed into the modern Arsenel FC PPs there is a museum called "Firepower" now based on the site, well worth a visit if your in the area
