The entry for this casualty has his surname wrongly spelt:

BADCOOK, HARRY CAMP Initials: H. C. Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Leicestershire Regiment Unit Text: 1st/5th Bn.Date of Death: 31/07/1915 Service No: 3293 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 33. Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

The same name appears in SDGW, would this suggest this is more than just a modern transcription error from paper to computer records?

His name appears on the Ibstock war memorial correctly spelt as "H.C.BADCOCK", his Medal index card entry confirms this:

Description

Medal card of Badcock, Henry C

Corps Regiment No Rank

Leicestershire Regiment 3293 Private

Leicestershire Regiment 3293 Private

His birth was registered as: Births Mar 1898 - Badcock Henry Camp Mt. Bosworth 7a82

Market Bosworth is the registration centre for those born in Ibstock, Leicestershire

He appears in the 1901 census as: Henry Badcock aged 3, Born Ibstock, Civil Parish Ibstock, Occupation Juvenile

The names "Henry" and "Harry" are interchangeable.

It appears as BADCOOK is the original registers so it is not a modern variation.

What does it say on the death certificate? The Index entries are not sufficient as they contain too many errors.

Terry,

That was quick! I'm not a relative so had not thought about getting a copy of the actual death cert. Check my signature to see my connection to the Ibstock War Memorial. What's the next step in such cases?

We need some form of documentary evidence. We could start with the MIC. I'll look it up.

I'll report it with only the MIC as evidence.

Here it is....

I'm sorry I don't have "ancestry" membership, or I could have let you have the census image etc., but is an image of the relevant memorial panel of any use to you?

I'd have to PM that to you as the file size is approx 900Kb.

He was hardly in France four weeks.

Hi Chris

Had a similar issue with a local Littleborough Soldier. Sent various items to CWGC but eventually got hold of his birth certificate from the Registrars Office in Southport. The CWGC confirmed almost by return that the entry in the website would be amended but that the change to the headstone would take a little longer. Excellent work and true recognition for a fallen soldier.

I obtained the Birth Certificate on line. You maybe able to obtain the birth certificate from the address below:-

Fiona,

I am not sure Terry Denham will see your post at the bottom of this thread. You'd be better of starting a new topic or sending a PM to Terry to grab his attention.

Chris.

Fiona

You need not worry about Thiepval Memorial as forenames are not inscribed on it - only initials.

I'll check the entry as it many be a simple clerical error.

Thanks for that Terry.

Nothing new.

Just a pic of the name as it is spelled on the Menin Gate.

Badcook indeed.
