Soldier with King's Shropshire Light Infantry

Hello,

A good friend of mine's Grandfather lost his brother in WW1. The family have never visited his grave, but they are coming across on a 'pilgrimage' next month. It would be really good if I could offer them some additional information - eg. the action he was killed in (I believe he died from his wounds).

He was Private Herbert Roberts, 15067, and he died October 10th, 1918, aged 20. He is buried in the cemetery at Tincourt.

I'm guessing that he died in a field hospital near to Tincourt, but I'm not sure what the action would have been, so close to the end of the war.

Can anybody help?

Thank you

Neil

Battle of Cambrai

The 1st Btn KSLI during the early hours of October 9th launched an attack. The orders to advance coming to the btn very late the btn only just reached the trenches in time to launch the attack.

The btn pushed onto Fresnoy Le Grand, which was found to be unoccupied!

At 10:00am German Artillery shelled the village. Later in the day the btn pushed along the Fresnoy-Bohain railway.

Congratulary Message from G.O.C 6th Division

'The difficulties were very great owing to darkness, fatigue and the necessarily short time available, and the disorganisation after yesterdays battle, but they were successfully overcome by the energy of the battalion and company commanders.

Hi Neil (nsc)

I can add a little more about John Herbert Roberts, he enlisted in late October 1914, and would have joined the 3rd Battalion (training battalion). On landing in France/Flanders he joined the 2nd Battalion, I do not know when he moved to the 1st Battalion.

ShropshireMad (Neil) I hope you to not mind me saying this but the 1st K.S.L.I. did not pushed onto Fresnoy Le Grand, this village was in the 138th Brigades line of attack. The K.S.L.I. were just off to the left of the village, on reaching the first objective the K.S.L.I. only sent patrols into Fresnoy Le Grand, it also pushed patrols up to the second objective, which was the railway line that ran between Fresnoy Le Grand and Bohain.

Also I hope you do not mind me saying that Pte. Roberts could well have been wounded on the 8th October, as the Battalion were in action on this day too, and Tincourt is a good fifteen miles away (thats if I have worked out the mileage right).
