Please spare a thought today for my great-uncle L/Cpl rnest Gordon Bennitt and his comrades of the 15th Royal Warwickshire Regiment (2nd Birmingham Pals), killed in action when their trenches were shelled and mined near Roclincourt on June 4, 1916. His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Arras memorial to the missing.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. He joined up at the age of 41 (number 326 in the battalion). Although some of those killed in the attack were recovered and buried, he lies deep underground, somewhere near the remains of Claude and Clarence craters (pictures on the Long, Long trail site, Arras battlefield virtual tour).

cheers Martin B
