RE Railway Companies Renumbering

Hi,

For some time I have been researching my family's involvement in WW1. One of my Great Uncles served in the Royal Engineers as Sapper Harry Allen. His original serial number was 289245 later changed to WR/274715. I have tried researching him but it appears his service records have nor survived. I have been to the National Archives a couple of times but as I have not been able to identify his company, I have been reducing to trawling through those records available. Those I have searched, have not turned anything up. His medal roll index and entry in the medal roll give no clues, I have tried to write to the Royal Engineers museum but after five months still haven't received a reply!!!.

I know it's a long short, but can anybody identify which company I should be looking for from his serial number? Even a rough guide would reduce the records to search.
