Army Life Immediately Prior to 4 Aug 14

Good Evening Everyone,

Can anyone on the forum point me in the direction of any material regarding Army life immediately prior to and during the mobilisation of GB based units of the BEF? I am particularly interested in material recording the experiences of Pte up to Junior Officer. The sort of things I mean are daily routine, accommodation, facilities in barracks, training, unit administration, pay and conditions, life in barracks for both single and married soldiers, etc. I have already read 'There's A Devil In the Drum' by John Lucey, 'Old Soldiers Never Die' by Frank Richards, 'The Phantom Brigade', by APG Vivian, 'General Jack's Diary', edited by John Terraine and 'The Vanished Army' by Tim Carew but I am now looking for reference material including pictures to build on impressions that I have gained.

Many thanks in advance and I apologise for such a big request but any pointers will be gratefully received.

Kind Regards

Woolly

Click here for a good book on the subject.

Pete,

That was quick and many thanks for the link. By a complete coincidence my Father recommended that website to me earlier on today when I told him that I was looking for a copy of 'The Long Trail' by John Brophy and Eric Partridge!

Kind Regards

Wooly,

Regimental Gazettes and Journals will give you a one sided perspective, but very interresting.

Try The Victorian and Edwardian Army by Fabb and Carman, Army Life in the 90s by Phillip Warner, The Victorian Army in Photographs by David Clammer. All photographic collections with accompanying text. They give a reasonable flavour
