Researching Fetcham WW1 Memorial looking for information

Frederick C Johnson East Surrey Regiment

I have found 2 via the CWGC

Private 8253 F C Johnson 1st Bn East Surrey Regiment died 27th April 1915

Private 7655 F Johnson 1st Bn East Surrey Regiment died 24th August 1914

Did either have family connections with Fetcham Surrey

All the others I have found their connections

Welcome to the Forum

According to SDGW

8253 Private Frederick Charles Johnson was born Westminster Middx, enlisted London, residence not given.

7655 Private Frederick Johnson, born Clapton Middx, enlisted Stratford Essex, residnce agin not given

So no Fetcham connections

My gut feeling would be the first one.... Frederick C. I don't know if you've got their medal index cards yet, but they are below.......

I've checked for a record but as yet there's hardly any Johnsons listed on Ancestry.

If you have 2nd Lt Gavin Caldwell on the memorial, I have some info to share (much of it gleaned through other members of this forum! ;) ). His father was Rector of Fetcham, and was previously Rector of our parish, so Gavin is on our memorial too.

To update you with Gavin Caldwell our Church had 2 candlesticks given back to the Church on Remembrance Day 2008 these had been made for his mother in memory of her son. They had been in someones collection and on his death the family found out that they had belonged here at Fetcham so returned them.

What a lovely thing to happen, Janice.

Here's Gavin in 1916 with his father the Rector, and his uncle the General.
