What regiment is this?

Hi,

This is a photo of my Great-Grandfather, Henry William Godden - who was born in Islington, London in 1892, but lived in Bedlington, Northumberland at the time of WWI.

He was a coal miner, but my Great-Uncle told me that he was briefly in the War.

He mentioned a few regiments, and I can remember him mentioning the Hussars, and possibly the Northumberland Fusiliers.

Can anybody tell me what regiment this is, and whether my Great-Grandfaher was likely to have served in the War?

On the group photo - he is bottom left.

Thanks,

Darin.

It looks very much like a Northumberland Fusilier badge. In the group photo two soldiers have their medals up, these were issued some after the end of the war so its possible your g/gfather did not serve in the war. Ralph.

That first photo has very much an "apres la guerre finis" look to it.

Yep, the distinctive 'splayed-out' look of the flames of the fusilier grenade badge distinguish the N. Fusiliers. Interesting that two of the men wear full medals - what occasion could that be?!

Joining the NF in 1921 would explain the medals?

Unfortunately that is the only page I can find on Ancestry.

Hi everyone,

Thank you,

I am pretty sure that will be him.

The soldier on the left wearing his medals has a fourth medal after his 1914/15 Star Trio which I would suggest might be the Territorial Force War Medal. If this assumption is correct, the photograph may have been taken on the battalion's annual summer camp probably in the early 1920's.

My thought was a Territorials camp, too. It would be the TFEM (or equivalent) rather than the TWM as you could not get the Star and TWM.

Steve,

you are of course right about it being a TFEM, I should have checked my facts more closely, or better still, stop writing hurried posts at 7.30am before rushing for the train.

Simon.
