Messina1915 Posted 26 May , 2008 Share Posted 26 May , 2008 Put Atherstone and Warwickshire into the including fields in Geoff's Search Engine and you'll get 140 or so possibilities - unfortunately that's about double the number of photographs on the memorial, so you might have problems working out which ones are on and which ones aren't. Cheers, Carole.
izzy Posted 26 May , 2008 Share Posted 26 May , 2008 best bet is to check local newspaper archives for obituarys of local servicemen. these useually carry pictures of deceased and can be used for comparison. next step would be c.w.g.c and soldiers died. Ghost Posted 27 May , 2008 Share Posted 27 May , 2008 Is this the memorial which is in the memorial hall? I saw an article about it a few months ago, but dammed if I can remember what it was about. I have an inkling that it was about the names of the men also. The memorial hall is directly across the street from the Library where there is a good stock of microfiche/film. You might try asking Lorna Dirveiks at Atherstone Heritage Society. She is also involved with the Nuneaton and NW family history society.
rollofhonour Posted 27 May , 2008 Share Posted 27 May , 2008 You may get lucky and find the minutes of the orginal war memorial committe in the local archives, and a list of names and reasons for inclusions.

kevan darby Posted 28 May , 2008 Author Share Posted 28 May , 2008 Many thanks for all postings. I got the above photo from Atherstone Libary a few years ago, and while i was at the libary i checked the local newspaper and got some info on casualties in Atherstone but their was no photos in paper. i have since looked at the photo of memorial again and you can just make out names on some of the pictures. Is this Memorial in the Memorial Hall, does anyone live local the check and if so take a photo. thanks again for info and advice
Ghost Posted 28 May , 2008 Share Posted 28 May , 2008 Went to do just that today, but due to the torrential rain I never made it. I will have a look this week though. One thing that did catch my eye was the picture third row from the botton, centre. Looks to me like someone on my other halves side. Capt. Walter Hill Chetwynd Ex 16th Lancers, died 1918. I have not found him on the CWGC roll. But if your brother is the local Baronet who holds the regions purse strings would you dare leave him off the local memorial. Surely it isn't him! Ghost Posted 4 June , 2008 Share Posted 4 June , 2008 (edited) Not in the memorial hall, unknown in county council offices, on the agenda of Town Council meeting tonight (Wed). But I did come across this in the Black Horse Atherstone. It is a memorial with framed portraits of WW2 service personel. Most of the names are illegible. The attached paper is a record of a Registered Charity. Lost my glasses so phone focus is not the best. annball Posted 28 November , 2009 Share Posted 28 November , 2009 Can anyone put any names to the men on this memorial from atherstone in Warwickshire Hi Kevan Did you get anywhere with naming the men in the photo? I am trying to find out about my great great grandfather Joseph Frederick Hargrave, Gunner, who died in 1917. He lived in Atherstone all his life except when playing football for Leeds City and other teams. Do you know whether he is on the Atherstone War Memorial? I have his service record and his medals were sentto his mother. Ann

there may be others who didn't fill in their NoK address, and no doubt other Pals can identify uniforms and rank that may help relate Names to the photographs. Is there any other Roll of Honour or War Memorial listing for the dead of Atherstone? It's a very touching tribute, but I assume not all families may have had photo's of their loved ones? Certainly some are in civilian clothes as I think it was only for "special occasions" that a photo would be taken in those times. Hope this re-ignites interest for you and helps resolve their identities.

Ghost Posted 30 November , 2009 Share Posted 30 November , 2009 That memorial is an enigma. I have been looking and asking about it since this thread started. I have had the town council questioned and even the mayer of North Warwickshire, as well as some local geneologists and historians, but to no avail. Only one person I have asked (Darby and Joan dance club I think) came up with antthing positive saying that one of the men looked like her brother, but she was very young at the time of his death. I even forgot to make a note of the name. The picture is from the warwickshire web pages, so I contacted the archivest, but she too was unable to shed any light on the pictue. KevinBattle Posted 30 November , 2009 Share Posted 30 November , 2009 What a shame that this beautiful little memorial seems to have been lost. Hopefully it will be found in a local Church or Village Hall somewhere out of sight. Is there any record of who put forward the Names for inclusion on the War Memorial itself? Does anyone have the list of all 4 sides of the War Memorial, so at least all the Names will be known, even if we can't relate faces to them? I note one looks to be wearing a slouch hat, any record of an Atherstone man serving in an Australian unit? One at least seems to be in hospital blues, another with a Scottish regiment. Perhaps some expert Pal with knowledge of uniforms can comment on who is with what unit, and maybe a few might be identified! Good luck and never give up! daggers Posted 30 November , 2009 Share Posted 30 November , 2009 Have you tried churches/chapels? A church might have copies of a parish magazine of the period even if the memorial is not there. A letter to a local newspaper might bring some memories of where the memorial was sited. What about the photographer's name at the foot?
KevinBattle Posted 30 November , 2009 Share Posted 30 November , 2009 I have taken the opportunity to contact the Nuneaton & North Warwickshire Family History Society and directed them to this thread. Apologies if any of you have already contacted someone there. There is a Memorial Hall in the village, so perhaps it may be stored safely somewhere therein. Hopefully, this may lead to the discovery of the Memorial Board, it would be criminal if it has been lost forever. Hope this helps
Ghost Posted 6 December , 2009 Share Posted 6 December , 2009 aeb. Coincidently I saw the report of F.J.Hargave's death in the Tamworth Herald archives this week. It was not an obituary, nor did it contain a photo, which may be in a later edition. The notice read as best I can make out:- The death is reported of Gunner Fred Hargrave, Garrison Artilliary, of Atherstone, a well known professional footballer. After figuring prominantly in local football he was signed up By Aston Villa some ten years ago. He was a clever centre forward and afterwards played for Leicester City, Burton United, Wallsall, Stafford Rangers and Kiddeminister. He belonged to a family of footballers, two brothers played in the Birmingham Combination. Hope this is of interest and use to you. P.S. Kevi W4, Atherstone is a town, even though it does not have a MacDonalds. Alan

One of her members suggested that the Dolphin might know of its whereabouts: This is my reply OK, will see if someone can check out the Dolphin - is there any specific reason why that pub would have it? Any link with casualties or is it because it's just across the road from the War Memorial or Memorial Hall? PS: Had a quick Google for pubs in Atherstone - I think you mean the New Dolphin Inn - and Atherstone seems to be a place I should visit and check out not just the New Dolphin but The Market Tavern, Old Isaacs, The Red Lion, The White Horse, The Wine Bar, the Bat and Heaver (hic!) the Bull, The Barge and Bridge and ever so very many more (hic!) - not so much "mad as a hatter" but as drunk as one!!! Shurely one of them has a Memorial, no wonder no one is sure which one though!! So, no problem in not having a McD, sounds like a good TOWN (thanks, Ghost!) to visit for a pub crawl and I now know why no one can remember where the Memorial is!! Ghost Posted 6 December , 2009 Share Posted 6 December , 2009 Atherstone has, as has been memtioned a profusion of hostelries. It was on the main coach road from London to Manchester, and has coach houses all along Long street, with no hatting left in town and no other industries I don't know how they keep going. The Dolphin, a threshold I have never crossed is next door to the Black Horse where the other memorial is (see post #13), and quite a way from the mem hall.
