Chris Posted 13 February , 2004 Share Posted 13 February , 2004 hi Not sure but it looks to me as if the first line may say ? Lt. May (as in his rank), rather than colt, but my eyes are getting tired Chris
Max Posted 13 February , 2004 Share Posted 13 February , 2004 If you screw your eyes up the word below the mans name looks like YMCA. But then again I am as blind as a bat. Andy
Blackblue Posted 13 February , 2004 Share Posted 13 February , 2004 Looks to me like.... Capt MAY YMHA ? 2nd BN HQ. I am not sure what YMHA stands for. If this guy is Australian and the item is Great War vintage there appear to be two possibilites. None are listed on the WW1 Nominal Roll as serving with the 2nd Battalion although they may have. 1. Captain Donald Greig MAY - AGBD (Australian Base Depot) 2. Captain William MAY - 59th Battalion If you want to check these two out and see if they are your man you can order their service papers on line at Australian Archives. This may confirm that one of them served with the 2nd Battalion. The possibility is that the item is post WW1 meaning it may be bwteen the wars or WW2. There are over 600 mays listed in the WW2 nominal roll and you can't search by unit. Perhaps if someone can decipher what the YMHA? is it may give a further clue. Blackblue Posted 13 February , 2004 Share Posted 13 February , 2004 I would guess that he has written over his previous rank hence LT became CAPT.
roger Posted 13 February , 2004 Share Posted 13 February , 2004 It looks to me as if the letters on the centre line have been written on top of another set, the Y looks as if it's on top of a O. Not much help I'm afraid but someone else might have an idea. Roger.

christine liava'a Posted 16 February , 2004 Share Posted 16 February , 2004 YMHA = Young Men's Hebrew Association ? Though whether this existed in Auistralia at the time I don't know. It has existed there since the 1940s.
