Best compilation of WW1 songs?

Can anyone recommend a good compilation of WW1 tunes? I bought one from the Western Front Association website but it's pretty ropey. The piano/singing tunes are fine, but why they felt the need to put synthesizers on it I don't know!

I'm tempted to get the 'Oh what a lovely war' soundtrack but I didn't really like the film that much, although I enjoyed the music..

I'm quite happy with either contemporary versions, well performed, or original recordings..

I remember when I was a kid, my dad had an LP in his collection called "Warren Mitchell Sings Songs of the Great War", or something like that.

I remember thinking how odd that was! Alf Garnett singing Long Way to Tipperary!!

Oh! My mum had that too! Picture on the front of him in a tin hat - he sang in character as Alf Garnett as I remember it.

I'm up for some Alf Garnett if anyone has recordings of it!

Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty

I also went to the iTunes store and entered various key words and found quite a selection of the old songs. You can download them for $0.99 or just sit and listen to all the clips that are free.

Well there goes an hour!

Richard

p.s. for those that have LPs that they want to convert to MP3, we figured it out last year to do the CBC recordings here at the CEFSG - works well!

In the early 60s I had an excellent LP of WW1 songs produced, if memory serves, by Charles Chilton (he of Journey into Space fame) and based on a radio program on the same subject. He also produced one on ACW songs. A specialist vinyl record shop might help.

If you keep an eye out for old 'pub piano' records in the junkshops,

they usually have one or four old WW1 standards per side!

I've got two here I bought purely for the cover art, 20p each

'Honky Tonkin - Digits McPhee at the old pub piano with bass and drums'

and

'Ernie Wilson, piano and his rhythm boys - The Old Pub Piano'
