salientpoints Posted 13 February , 2004 Share Posted 13 February , 2004 Apart from it was issued to commemorate in inauguration of the Menin Gate on Sunday 24 July, 1927 by Field Marshal Lord Plumer, I don't know anymore about its background. I did try to find out the other week as there was one on ebay for £11 the other day. Ryan

Neil Mackenzie Posted 28 January , 2007 Share Posted 28 January , 2007 Despite searching I have not found any threads on the Menin Gate medallion other than this one. Does anyone know how many were issued and did they go to everyone who attended the opening or anyone who had a relative listed on the Gate or was it more limited than that? My dad had been given this some time ago and kindly passed it on to me today. Thanks. Neil
ianw Posted 28 January , 2007 Share Posted 28 January , 2007 It has the appearance of a locally produced souvenir medallion. I can't imagine that an official medallion would have that wobbly lettering.
Neil Mackenzie Posted 3 May , 2020 Share Posted 3 May , 2020 The IWM has one in their collection (https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30105308) Although there is no picture on the IWM site the description is exactly the same. Probably a bit of tourist ware from the unveiling. Neil
high wood Posted 19 June , 2023 Share Posted 19 June , 2023 There are at least two different types of this medallion, probably by different manufacturers. There were a great many visitors at the dedication of the Menin Gate and subsequently a large demand for souveniers. I believe that they came with a ribbon, but I do not recall seeing a complete example.
