I have reference to a Mool Chund Saihgal who was assigned to 1/5th Devons when they were stationed in Lahore 1916-17. I understand it is some kind of secretary but does anyone have a better idea of the role and typically who filled it.

I think that in your context the Mir Munshi was the senior clerk or language teacher employed by the unit.
